We are GUESTS of CDCR. Safety and Security is MOST IMPORTANT…more important than sobriety or client happiness. If you understand the custody point of view, you will understand what is going on around you. To be effective, we have to work in harmony with custody! Philosophy...
THE RULES... • Do not bring in or take out items for or by students. This includes gifts and/or art from students. Tell them you are not allowed to do so. If they continue to ask, report this to your supervisor/coordinator. • You should do nothing for students that they cannot do for themselves...nothing. • No Private Contracts!!
Do not make phone calls or mail letters. • Do not give or loan money or make change for your students. • NEVER let them have your keys FOR ANY REASON!!!!
Fraternization with students is not allowed. • Do not discuss your personal affairs with students! This includes your family, friends, and personal history. • Do not give your address or phone number to students!!!
No Emotional Relationships with students… • Do not bring any type of drugs, firearms or weapons into the site. • Do not become involved in the court cases of students. • Do not discuss site procedures, policies or facility design with students.
Do not bring materials into the site unless they are related to class. • Do not bring in any personal care items for the students. • If any situation should arise in your classroom which you feel could cause a threat to you or anyone else, do not take direct action. Get help from a deputy!
Some teachers have developed relationships with local food banks, donations, etc to provide goodies for the class. While this is a wonderful morale-builder and general public service for your students, DO NOT allow them to interrupt the flow of instruction to casually get up and down to get another plate. Do this on breaks. Feeding the Masses
Evacuation Instructions... • MUST be posted. Get clarification from your Coordinator.
Professional attire. If someone you know enters class, let your coordinator know. Know the facility rules! Don’t get physical! 115’s (disciplinary reports) are written in technical language. Do not get personal! And still more…
No Students Under the Influence of Drugs/Alcohol…. • Alcohol • Marijuana • Opiates: Heroin, Codeine • Stimulants: Cocaine, Methamphetamine
Practice and Model professionalism. Form collegial relationships. Get the support you need. Make and Enforce Classroom Rules. Be Positive and Supportive…..but NO codependence. No 12 step sponsorship of students. Be Prepared…..
