What is it? A new transport strategy for Hounslow. Sets out our objectives and targets for next twenty years. Sets out a more detailed list of schemes for the next three years (to 2013/2014). Indicates some ‘major schemes’ which may be taken forward in the coming years.
The ‘Transport Vision’ for the Borough Hounslow’s transport system will enable all those who live in or visit the area to make their trips safely and conveniently; whilst supporting environmentally sustainable economic growth and improving health

Why should businesses care? Transport a key concern for businesses in Hounslow – both a reason to locate here and the biggest complaint! Improving public transport (and increasingly bicycle) access to business sites is key for aiding recruitment and retention. Reducing congestion and improving journey time reliability important for ensuring competitiveness. We’ve pulled out 6 proposals that may interest you…
1 - Focus on Efficient Car Use Strategy accepts that the private car will remain mode of choice for majority of trips Renewed emphasis on improving efficiency of this mode of transport – • Support for Electric and low emission vehicles • Car clubs and car sharing • High occupancy vehicles lanes? • Managing demand…
2 - Enhancing Public Transport Reduced funding available - but still an opportunity to improve or consolidate services. Also an opportunity to campaign and build a business case for schemes post 2012 and 2018… Specific projects include: • Formal modelling of the Overground West Link - Hounslow to Stratford line (OWL) and the West London Orbital (via the Sub-regional Transport Plan for west London). • Support for HS2 interchange at Old Oak Common (gives weight to OWL). • Support in principle for Airtrack and improving sustainable access to Heathrow • Continued emphasis on improving the road network for buses; targeted support using s106 for extending routes and increasing frequency and capacity

3 – Encouraging Efficient Business Transport Increased funding for supporting development of the Golden Mile group and for shared initiatives. • Prioritising possible initiatives to be discussed at next Golden Mile steering group meeting (9 March). Support for businesses across the borough who want to develop strategies to promote sustainable travel Encouraging efficient freight transport
4 – Mainstreaming Cycling Need to increase cycle rates from 2.8% to 6% by 2026. We’ll do this by: • Developing a ‘greenways’ network linking parks and open spaces across the borough and with neighbouring authorities. • Working with businesses to promote cycling and improve facilities at the ‘work end’/ Working with partners such as Hounslow Homes to promote cycling and improve facilities at the ‘home end’. • Working in partnership with TfL to ensure the CSH 9 along the A315 is an exemplar scheme. • Improving signage across the sub-region. • Continued investment in promotional events such as European Mobility Week’ and ‘Bike Week’ etc • ‘Continued funding for small improvements across Isleworth and Brentford (5-10 schemes to be implemented in 2011/12).
5 – Holistic ‘whole corridor’ approach More funding allocated to an ‘holistic’ corridor scheme each year Will tackle a ‘problem’ junction or road length Major improvements for sustainable modes and an improved street scene 2010/11 and 2011/12 – Twickenham Road (£800,000+) 2012 onwards - ? (£800,000)
6 – Network 2020 Private Finance Initiative for Highways maintenance commences in 2013. Unprecedented investment into Hounslow’s streets In order to maximise this opportunity to reshape our network for the needs of the 21st century we need to build a ‘bookshelf’ of schemes ready to go. These will seek to: • Where possible improve journey time reliability and speed for buses • Improve facilities for cyclists and pedestrians, particularly at key public transport interchanges • Where possible tackle congestion ‘pinch points’ and smooth traffic flow Expect to be involved in identifying opportunties for improvements
Consultation 1. What are the major barriers you face using sustainable transport methods (walking, cycling, public transport, car sharing, low emission vehicles) in Hounslow? 2. How do you think we should seek to reduce these barriers? 3. Is there a particular area of the borough where you feel investment in the transport network is needed? Why? 4. Do you agree with the five priorities set out under each of our transport programmes in the Delivery Plan section? If not, what other projects should we consider? 5. Do you feel the proposed LIP objectives and targets are appropriate? Transport Forum event – 24 Feb. Public meeting 7pm-9pm. Lampton Park conference centre.
