Community & Service – Yateem Charity By Muneera 10B
What is the activity I was involved in? • Even though I was very late in joining a community and service activity due to the lack of work and stress in grade 10, I joined one of the best services which is the opportunity to go around and convince people and collect money for charity to help the orphanage.
The community I served. • The community I have served throughout the orphanage charity was a big role because I had to talk to random people which I’m not very good at and try to convince them why it’s important to help the orphans. Being a seller for the coupons, I had to use my break time to go around and talk to people, I did not have a proper break in this week but I was happy at the same time that I am helping people that need our help.
The need that I decided to address • The charity group have decided to sell the coupons in school and widen the opportunity for everyone to join in helping the charity, not just grown ups have to help, but also young people in our age have to learn about the needy people living amongst us. This service has helped the community because we give children with no family money to buy what they wish for. It’s also important to send around the message that we get what we want easily from out parents, but the orphans don’t usually have the opportunities we have. In this case, it’s very important to help them so they can live happy lives just like us.
Action plan developed so the service could be delivered. • The roles that I have took and participated in are to go around during my free time which is during my breaks and lunches and telling people what the orphan charity is all about and telling them why it’s a good idea to help them buy donating money, most people would buy coupons from me and some wouldn’t. I have also taken the role to talk to people outside school about why it’s a good idea to help them and what will the children gain, which is happiness.
Narrative of the event • I think the orphan charity service went very well. I finished selling all the coupons that equals to 500 riyals in 2 days only, I went around everywhere and asked a lot of people, at the first day I collected 270 riyals and the second day I collected 230 riyals. Things went better than what I planned, I thought most of the people wouldn’t donate, but as I talked I felt that the people seem convinced and they would donate. I learned that people need someone to talk to them and explain, not just going up to them and asking them “would you like to donate” because they don’t seem convinced by that and they would just say “no thanks”.
MYP learner profile • I learned about my self that I am a caring person because I cared so much about the orphans that I gave up my breaks and lunches to go around and let people donate money. I am also a communicator since I had to talk to a lot of people I didn’t know in order to tell them what this service is all about and how might it help the society when I am a very quite person. I am knowledgeable because I did some background information in order to understand more about the service before I started doing it. I am also an open-minded person because I didn’t give up when people refused to donate, I would quickly walk to someone else.
Evaluation of the service • I think that this is a very strong service that could be continued in the future years at Qatar Academy since the goal of the service were achieved and more than 5,000 riyals was donated. The community in the orphanage have improved so much since they now have money to buy what they want a toy, a laptop, a mobile phone and other stuff… It built happiness in them. The challenges were that we had to convince people which are in the 6th or 7th grade where they don’t usually care about those stuff because they are too young, but we have overcome those problems by explaining why it’s important in an easier way. I think to insure greater success we should donate to the orphanage in more than one way, not just coupons, but also school activities such as a bake sale, a cloth drive…
