Rationale • Atlantic area has an identity • Need for increasing research capacity and networking • Many years of cooperation • EFI has become a multi-governmental body • IEFC (32 organisations) and EFI aim both at improving research capacity and networking
Thematic scope • Main Aim : Sustainable management and competitive utilisation of cultivated forest resources • Contribute mainly to three topics of EFI strategy : • (1) Effects of forest management and the forest value chain on economic, environmental, social and cultural sustainability in Europe. • (2) Impacts of climate change and other (a)biotic disturbances, and development of adaptation and mitigation strategies in forest management. • (3) Competitiveness of forest resources for energy and material products in relation with to other natural resources.
Geographic scope • Focusing on atlantic zone : • GB • Ireland • Western France • Northern Spain • Portugal
Workplan • EFIATLANTIC will contribute to the 4 pillars of EFI : • Networking • Research • Information and dissemination • Advocacy • And also to • Information services and capacity building
Workplan : Research • Short term: Vulgarization of existing work • manage and implement REINFFORCE project “REsource INFrastructures for monitoring, adapting and protecting european atlantic FORests under Changing climatE” • 70 trials, common protocols and monitoring • ENERSYLVA project rejected • Mid term: strategic research agenda for Atlantic Area Submit new proposals on mains RO topics, ROKFOR project • Long term: implementation of the strategic agenda, contribution to all research activities of EFI
Workplan : Information and dissemination • Maintain online scientific directory with experts skills • Updating database on models for forest • Maintaining bib list on wood material advantages • Adaptation of existing IEFC tools : • Four languages website with project results • Four languages news letter • Mailing list for targeted groups • Forum on cultivated forest
