  4. Task Force Work • Several meetings over summer 2013 • Congregational survey (253 responses) • Research regarding “peer churches” • Analysis of options • Preparation of draft proposals

Research of “Peer” Churches • Contacted 20 “peer” churches in DC area • 15 have multiple Sunday worship services • 10 of the 15 start first service at or before 9:00 • 5 of the 15 start last service at or after 11:15 • Many have compressed or eliminated fellowship to accommodate multiple services and education • But the most surprising finding...

  6. 13 of the 15 churches with multiple services (and 4 of the 5 single-service churches) have Sunday school at a time other than worship.

Conclusions/Observations • Solid congregational support for change • Changes in worship times unlikely to have a significant impact on attendance • 60 minutes is not enough time for meaningful adult education and fellowship—9:00/11:15 provides more “breathing room” • Do we need to revisit keeping Sunday school concurrent with first service?

  9. Key Considerations • Importance to some families of containing Sunday school within the worship hour • Importance of worship attendance for older children (Grade 3 and up) • Need for additional volunteers to lead classes (both youth and adult) • Maintaining children’s choir participation

  10. Next Steps • Early Nov. 2013: Task Force submits final proposal(s) to CE & WM Committees • Nov.-Dec. 2013: Committees send proposals to session • Dec. 2013-Jan. 2014: Session action • Feb. 2014: Begin incorporating changes into planning for 2014-2015 program year • Sept. 2014: New schedule begins
