  1. 1960’s Rock and Roll Let The Party Commence!

Beach Boys • Began in 1961 with The Wilson Brothers (Brian, Dennis and Carl) along with cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine (later David Marks) in Hawthorne, CA. • Managed by Murray Wilson, domineering father of the Wilson Bros. • Dennis was the only surfer in the band. • “Surfin,” “Surfin’ USA,” “Surfin’ Safari.” • Brian stopped touring in 1965 and was replaced eventually by Bruce Johnston.

  3. Brian • Stayed at home and wrote, produced and recorded while the band toured. • The Smile album was a master work but never released. Brian and his backup band put it together in the 2000’s to go on tour. • Dennis Wilson died due to accidental drowning in 1983, although he was in to drugs and alcohol. Carl passed away due to cancer in 1998.

British Invasion • Due to the great success of the Beatles many British bands gained fame in the USA. • Eric Burdon and the Animals (“House of the Rising Sun”), Dave Clark Five, Kinks, Rolling Stones, The Hollies, Peter and Gordon, Chad and Jeremy, Cilla Black, Petula Clark, Lulu, Marianne Faithful and Dusty Springfield. • Mersey Beat (Liverpool Bands)- Searchers, Swinging Blue Jeans, Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Herman’s Hermits and the Zombies.

  5. 1967 More British Waves • Yardbirds, Them (with Van Morrison), Moody Blues, Donovan and Tom Jones. • ProcolHarum, Fleetwood Mac, Spencer Davis Group, Small Faces (Rod Stewart and Ron Woods), Cream, Joe Cocker, Deep Purple, Led Zepelin, King Crimson and Blind Faith. • Some of the above bands would evolve and remain popular while others stayed the course and their popularity dwindled.

San Francisco/Psychedelic Rock • Began in 1965 and ended around 1970. • San Francisco was one center of this musical movement (also London and LA). • Grateful Dead, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe and the Fish and Quick Silver Messenger Company • In LA you could find The Doors, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Love, Captain Beefheart, Spirit, Iron Butterfly, Electric Prunes. • In London-Pink Floyd, Small Faces • NY had Vanilla Fudge, Velvet Underground

  7. Psychedelia • LSD/Acid was used by many musicians and young people. They thought that this expanded their minds, altered time. • Musically speaking, solos became long, meandering improvs. Hypnotic repetition • Sense of fluidity • Odd harmonies • Animated bass lines, drones and scales inspired by the music of India (Ravi Shankar). • An expression of the hippies drug culture

  8. Country Rock • A lot of the Psychedelic bands crossed-over to Country Rock, such as Grateful Dead. • Later came The Eagles, Poco, Pure Prairie League

The First Wave • One would say it was The Beatles but in reality it was Dusty Springfield. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yB7CjIzM86M&feature=player_detailpage • Though generally not credited with starting the "Invasion", Dusty Springfield was one of the first British artist to have significant success in the U.S., with her hit single "I Only Want to Be with You", released in November 1963. She appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show in early 1964 singing the popular hit, and continued to have several U.S. hits through the rest of the decade.   11. The Beatles • Five thousand fans, mostly young girls, were crowded onto the upper balcony of the airport's arrivals building, waving placards and banners to welcome the group. A further 200 reporters, photographers and cameramen from radio, television and the press were also clamoring for The Beatles' attention.

  13. Who are the Beatles and how did this happen • 1957 The Quarrymen first perform at a church lawn fete. The Quarrymen was started by John Lennon as a skiffle band, but soon became a rock band due to Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly. • George Harrison joins the band in 1958 (along with Lennon, Paul McCartney, Pete Best and Stu Sutcliffe. • 1960- Quarrymen become The Silver Beetles and 2 months later change to the Beatles.

To The Top • The Beatles played in Hamburg, Germany in the Indra Club • Paul McCartney (on discussing performing and other things they learned in Hamburg): "Sex...was one of the first things 'cause we were kids just let off the leash, you know. And then there was like, the amount of music we played -- we played -- the shear amount of music. Some evenings I think we probably...we played eight hour periods 'cause you'd come on and another band would take an hour and you'd take an hour, so we probably played four hours but we had to stretch it over an eight hour period. And that's an awful long time, man, to play. I mean even bands now with three or four hours sets is a hell of a long time."

  15. Climbing Still • 1961 The Beatles, after being deported, begin playing at lunch time at the Cavern Club in Liverpool. • They return to play in Hamburg again.   16. More Climbing • "Many people ask what are Beatles? Why Beatles? Ugh, Beatles? How did the name arrive? So we will tell you. It came in a vision - a man appeared on a flaming pie and said unto them, 'From this day on you are Beatles with an "A"'. 'Thank you Mister Man', they said, thanking him. And so they were Beatles."

  17. November 1961 NEMS manager Brian Epstein visits The Cavern Club and witnesses for himself what all the Liverpool teenagers were talking about. Brian becomes their manager in December. • Epstein searches for a record label but no one wants them. • The Beatles return to Germany and learn that Stu Sutcliffe had died of a brain hemorrhage.

  18. Comings and Goings • With Stu gone Paul takes over as bass player. Pete Best is fired from the band and Ringo Starr, who was with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes) takes over on drums. • Record deal with EMI (Parlophone) signed. • Audition their music to George Martin at Abby Road Studios. • Ringo Starr is told to play tambourine on first 2 Beatles hits

Andy White • “The trouble was that George Martin had already booked session drummer Andy White to sit in for Pete, and he’d never even met Ringo Starr, let alone auditioned him.WhenRingo Starr showed up, expecting to play, George Martin wasn’t about to chance it.He gave Best’s replacement a tambourine to bang on, and it was in this manner that their first EMI release, “Love Me Do,” was recorded.”

Beatlemania • Hysteria in NYC for the arrival of The Fab Four. • Beatles made movies “A Hard Day’s Night.” (1964) and “Help,” in 1965. • First band to play a baseball stadium (Shea Stadium) and broke attendance records. • Between 1965 – 1967 the Beatles look changed to a shaggier image…beards, longer hair. No more “uniform” look.

Beatlemania • After 1966, the ‘Fab Four’ would embrace a more esoteric world of spiritual gurus, free love, drugs and peace-ins that was a world away from the sharp cut suits of their original squeaky clean ‘boy-next-door’ image. • ‘Flower Power’ was sweeping the western world against a backdrop of materialistic harshness and war and it appeared that the Beatles were one of the major musical trailblazers of a social cult that gave parents and the authorities sleepless nights.

  22. Beatlemania • A musical summation of this new vibe had to be the Beatles’ next album ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club’, while its cinematic equivalent ‘Yellow Submarine’ in 1968 was in itself a visual Technicolor trip combining the surreal with vivid Acid Trip inspired animation.

  23. Last Days of Beatlemania • Upon the death of manager Brian Epstein (suicide), the Beatles were in disarray. McCartney was engaged to Linda Eastman and Lennon was engaged to Yoko Ono. Both Beatles had other plans for the band while George and Ringo stood in the background. • Paul wanted the Eastman’s (attorneys) to represent the group while George (backed by George and Ringo) wanted brash attorney Alan Klein.

  24. Apple Records • Founded by the Beatles in 1968. • Intended as a creative outlet for the Beatles. • Artists – Badfinger, James Taylor, Mary Hopkins, and Billy Preston. • Still around today.

  25. Beatles Ending • Beatles recorded a final album but not always together. • Their last hurrah was on the rooftop of Apple record where they performed several songs causing quite a stir in London.
