EUROCEANS Data Transformation Project : Biological and biogeochemical responses to ocean acidification Context / Motivation • Numerous papers have report on the effects of ocean acidification on marine organisms and communities. However, few papers have offered details concerning carbonate chemistry and other ancillary data. • When details on carbonate chemistry are given: The carbonate system parameters are often reported on different pH scales (NBS, total, free or seawater) using different sets of equilibrium constants. • Different units + Different sets of constants + Different pH scales • Data comparison : difficult !!
EUROCEANS Data Transformation Project : Biological and biogeochemical responses to ocean acidification Objectives • To gather data on the carbonate chemistry, biogeochemical processes, and other ancillary data that has been already published. • (2) To analyze and transform the metadata collected. (3) To make them available to the whole community via the EUR-OCEANS network database. 24 K € in Salary Started early January 2008 and run for 7 months duration
EUROCEANS Data Transformation Project : Biological and biogeochemical responses to ocean acidification Parameters to beCompiled • Metadata: Methods, Units, Constants, Scales, Time, date, depth, longitude, latitude…etc. • Core Parameters: Parameters of the carbonate chemistry (pH, pCO2, DIC, and/or TA…etc) and Salinity, temperature. • Ancillary Parameters: Photosynthesis, respiration, calcification, growth, abundance, irradiance, nutrients (N, Si, P)…etc This is not an exhaustive list ; it is continuously extended
