Election of 1800 • Jefferson (Republican) vs. Adams (Federalist) • Heated Campaign • Federalist threatened Civil War if Jefferson was elected • Republicans accusing John Adams of wanting to create a monarchy • Jefferson defeated Adams by receiving 73 Electoral votes • Running mate Aaron Burr also received 73 Electoral votes • The person who receives highest number of electoral votes is president….but what happens when both receive the same number of votes? • House of Reps would decide who would be President
House of Reps Voting for President • Deadlocked for 6 days • Jefferson ended up winning the election • To avoid this from happening in the future, put in place the 12th Amendment to change how electors voted • In 1804, Electors would vote separately for President and Vice President
Jefferson’s Inauguration • Inaugurated in March 1801 • First president to be inaugurated in Washington D.C. • Wanted to bring together a young, divided country
Revolution of 1800 • Jefferson thought of his presidency as “Revolution of 1800” • Wanted to make some big changes to make it a better country for the people • First goal was to limit the federal government’s power over states and citizens • Believed in idea known as “laissez-faire”….French word meaning, “let alone” • Laissez-faire: means that the government should not interfere in the economy
Putting Laissez-Faire Into Action • Reduced number of people in government • Fired all tax collectors, reduced number of U.S. diplomats • Decreased size of military • Sedition Act • Ordered the fines to be returned to the people that were charged with going against the act • Those imprisoned under Act were released • Did not reverse all Federalists policies, allowed Federalist officeholders to keep their jobs if they did them well and were loyal citizens • He believed the nation still had to repay their debt
Marbury vs. Madison • Jefferson did not uphold the appointments that Adams made during the final days of his presidency • Outcome: • Supreme Court ruled Judiciary Act of 1789 as unconstitutional, meaning the Supreme Court does not get their power from Congress, instead they get it from the Constitution • Established judicial review, authority of Supreme Court to strike down unconstitutional laws • Judge William Marbury did not keep his appointment
