New Nuclear Plant CM Maintaining the Virtual Plant June 30, 2009 • Russell Adams – Dominion • Ken Barry - EPRI
The Vision • New Nuclear Power Plants - Designed, Procured, and Constructed Differently • Computer Technology - 2D, 3D, Other Modeling Tech, Data, Databases and Electronic Document Sources Used Extensively • Computer-based Information Model Environment called the “Virtual Power Plant” • Virtual Power Plant - Comprehensive, Detailed and Able to be Integrated with Plant Design, Operations and Maintenance Databases and Documents/Records
The Must Nuclear Configuration Management Design Requirements “What needs to be there” Design Basis Conform Conform Plant Docs Facility Configuration Information “What we say is there” Physical Configuration “What is actually there” Physical Plant Conform Work Processes must assure that: Elements conform all the time All changes are authorized Conformance can be verified
The Challenge Nuclear Configuration Management Knowledge Workers EDB Conform Challenge Conform Challenge PD Plant Documentation Paper-based Quality Assurance Process Automation Systems AS Challenge Conform Lots of Tribal Knowledge , Semi-Connected and Disconnected Systems, Manual Processes and yes…… Paper
Food-For-Thought • “If you always do what you have always done, you will always be where you have always been” unknown • “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them” • Albert Einstein • “Think outside the Paper” Russell Adams • “Other Players go to where the puck is • Wayne Gretzky I go where the puck is going to be”
The Need • A Modern Automated, Integrated and Interoperable Configuration Management Program Must Be Established • Maintain consistency between the design requirements, physical configuration and facility configuration information • Ensure the ability to document and maintain compliance with the license basis • Needs to be Significantly Different than Configuration Management Programs Currently Used by Operating Plants
CMBG Document Objective Establishing CM for New NPPs As new nuclear power plants (NPPs) are ordered, designed and constructed, the insights and experiences of Configuration Management (CM) professionals should be used to establish as early and as robustly as possible the principles and practices needed to develop and implement processes and tools for identifying, establishing, and maintaining the alignment between design requirements, physical configuration, and configuration information that make up an effective CM program and ensure the ability to document compliance with the license basis.
