International Foundation • Established in 1954 • Fostering the education and exchange of information for trustees, administrators and other fund professionals • Found education niche with passage of the Labor-Management Relations Act of 1947 (Taft-Hartley Act)
CEBS • Passage of ERISA in 1974 influenced the CEBS program. • CEBS began in 1976 • Partnered with the Wharton School and later with Dalhousie University • Formalized curriculum • First CEBS designations awarded in 1980 • CPE Requirement
Society • Established in the early 1980s • Non-profit educational association • Provide specialized professional development and networking opportunities • Controlled corporation of the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans
Today • Both the International Foundation and the International Society educate and serve Canada and the United States • Working together to serve the entire benefits community

Membership Structure—Local Chapter • CEBS graduates must join the Society in order to join a local chapter • Why? So the Society has the financial resources to offer products and services to members • GBA, RPA, CMS designees and CEBS students are encouraged to join the Society or can opt for chapter affiliation only • Why? Local chapters are the Society’s—and the CEBS program’s—most valuable resources!
