What is Self Questioning? • Self questioning is a fairly new teaching strategy that involves students formulating and internalizing their own questions based on the content that they are learning.
Why do we use Self Questioning? • We use self questioning to build student’s metacognition and to give them a better understanding of the material they are attempting to learn.
When do we use Self Questioning? • Self Questioning can be used before learning a concept so that a learner can prepare him or herself to know what to look for. It can be used while learning a concept so that a learner can be sure they are comprehending what they are learning during the process of learning it. It can also be used after the concept has been learned so that a learner can ensure that he or she has received the appropriate knowledge about the topic that they have just learned and that they understand it.
How do we use self questioning? • An example of how to use Self Questioning in a topic such as reading: Before: What do I already know about the topic? What is my purpose for reading this? What do I think I will find out? During: Do I understand what I am reading thus far? Is this what I expected? After : What are the important details? What new information did I learn?
