Who is a Federalist? • Leaders = Alexander Hamilton, John Adams, Thomas Pinckney, and John Marshall • Stance on the National Bank = Favor of creating a national bank • Type of person attracted to the Federalist Party = Wealthy, merchant, northerner • Favorite European Country = Great Britain • Constitutional Beliefs = Loose Construction of the Constitution • Federal Government Beliefs = Strong Federal Government • Event that caused them to gain power = XYZ Affair

(Anti-Federalist) • Leaders of the party = Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Aaron Burr, James Monroe • Stance on the National Bank = Opposed the creation of a national bank • Type of person who was part of the political party = Poor, Southern, Western, farmer • Favorite European Country = France • Constitutional Beliefs = Strict Construction of the Constitution • Federal Government Beliefs = limited federal government • Event that Caused them to gain power = Alien and Sedition Acts

Why was the Election of 1796 different from the previous election? • 1st time more than one candidate ran • John Adams (Pinckney)– Federalist • Thomas Jefferson (Burr) – Democratic Republican • Political parties or groups that help elect people and shape policies • Federalist Party – wanted a strong federal government and supported industry and trade • Democratic Republican Party – wanted to limit the federal government’s power

How the election worked? • Each elector cast a vote for president and a separate vote for vice president (Adams, Pinckney, Burr, Jefferson) • The person with the highest number of votes was to be president • The person with the 2nd number of highest votes would be the vice president Thomas Jefferson John Adams Aaron Burr Thomas Pinckney

  6. Election Results: • Adams = 71 votes • Jefferson = 68 votes • Pinckney = 59 votes • Burr = 30 votes • Who wins as president? Vice President?

  7. They had not yet passed the 12th amendment (1804) • A separate vote is cast for the position of president and vice president. • You can not run for both offices
