Translation Competition 101 • You will translate a document from a • European Union (EU) language into English • Your teacher will select the 2 best translations • The 2 winning students will come to U of I • with their teacher on May 2 for a day of fun • and to learn more about college & translation

  4. What are the EU languages? There are 23 official languages: Bulgarian German Polish Czech Greek Portuguese Danish Hungarian Romanian Dutch Irish Slovak English Italian Slovene Estonian Latvian Spanish Finnish Lithuanian Swedish French Maltese

  5. What is the European Union?

  6. The EU is an economic union of 27 European countries (there is some political cooperation, too)

  7. Some Specifics on the EU • A single European market (no internal tariffs) • No passport required at borders within the EU • Origin of the EU began in 1951 • Around 500 million people

  8. 17 countries share a common currency: The euro

  9. Translation in the EU (and interpretation) • The EU translates: • Legislation • Reports • Correspondence • Webpages • Speeches • And more! Cost? The European Commission estimates €1 billion/yr
