  3. How to Get There • Timbuktu is located in Africa, on the south end of the Sahara, about eight miles north of the Niger River. • You could get to the city from all over, you can get the by camel or by foot from all around, or you could go along the Niger River to the city.

  4. Weather/Climate • The average temperature in Timbuktu is 29 degrees Celsius (84 degrees Fahrenheit). • The average temperature range in 12.5 degrees Celsius. • Timbuktu has an average of 17 mm of rain per month. • Very few days have large amounts of precipitation.

  5. The Basics • Population grew from about 10,000 people to 50-100,000 • Located in West Africa, where Niger flows into southern part of Sahara • In the Mali Empire, later the Songhai Empire • Trade city, later scholarly/religious focus

  6. Brief History • Timbuktu was first founded in the 11th century by the Tuareg nomadic tribe. After a century, Timbuktu was a place of learning and commerce. In the 14th century, Mansa Musa, the emperor of Mali, captured Timbuktu. And until 1339, the city of Timbuktu had peace and prosperity. However, since then, Timbuktu has been through a long conflict of rulers.

  7. Major Productions • In the fourteenth century, Timbuktu was the major center for gold and salt trade. • Timbuktu was also important for being a center of Islamic learning and scientific discovery.

  8. Physical Description • City of Mud, buildings mainly made of mud and other materials.

  9. Types of People there • Arabic was used for trade, religion, education, etc., but not as main every day language • Islam was the main religion • Kept elements from other African religions • Many schools and important universities • Libraries with many important documents

  10. Famous Landmarks • Timbuktu is know for its three main mosques, which form the University of Timbuktu, a school during the “medieval” period. • They are the Sankore, Djinguereber, and SidiYaha mosques/schools.

  11. Religion(s) • The major religion of Timbuktu was Islam. A lot of the people were nomads coming from all over. Even though the major religion you found in the city was Islam, they were very welcoming people, and they accepted many faiths.
