It’s a fact of life, we are not going to agree with everyone and we will encounter disagreements. • What are 3 examples of disagreements that may arise between students at school? • What are the possible outcomes if a disagreement is not handled respectfully with another student? • What are 3 examples of disagreements that may arise between a student and an adult at school? • What are the possible outcomes if a disagreement is not handled respectfully with a teacher?

It is not wrong or bad to disagree with anyone, as long as you can discuss your disagreement respectfully. • In this lesson, we are going to review the expectations of handling disagreements respectfully, particularly with adults. However, this can also be applied to disagreements with students.

  4. Remember…There are 3 important parts to all communication

  5. Tone of Voice In a disagreement, what are some non-examples of respectful tone of voice? (How would disrespectful tone of voice sound?) Calm voice Genuine Replying when spoken to Patiently wait turn to speak • Loud voice, shouting • Sarcastic • Ignoring disrespectfully or not answering adult • Interrupting

Eye contact Hands politely at your side or calmly being used to explain yourself Composed facial expression Calm breathing • No eye contact • Using hands threateningly or impolitely (fist or on hips) • Tense facial expression • Heavy breathing

  7. Word Choice In a disagreement, what are some non-examples of respectful words? (What are some examples of disrespectful words/phrases?) In a disagreement, what are some examples of respectful words/phrases? “I’m uncomfortable with…” “How can we resolve this?” “Can I suggest a compromise?” “This doesn’t seem fair to me. When can we discuss this?” • “That’s stupid.” • “It’s not my fault.” • “I hate you.” • “It’s not fair!” • “You just don’t like me!”

  8. Scenarios • Jenny raises her hand in the middle of class and asks to go to the restroom. Her teacher responds, “not right now” and continues with the lesson. Jenny stands up, slaps the desk with her hand and shouts “That’s not fair! You just let Jane go!” • How could Jenny have handled this disagreement more respectfully?

  9. Scenarios • Brian is playing dodgeball and is very sure that the ball he threw hit another student, but the student continues playing and the coach does not make the student sit out. Brian charges towards the coach yelling “Didn’t you see?? I got him out!” The coach responds “No, sorry I didn’t.” Brian exclaims “This is stupid!” • How could Brian have handled this disagreement more respectfully?

  10. You will face disagreements throughout your week. Respect yourself and others by calmly communicating your thoughts. When you do so, you will grow in maturity, not hurt those around you, and be better understood and respected.
