  1. Reason and Morality in a World of Limited Food Richard Watson

  2. Equity vs. Survival The principle of survival: the ultimate end is to survive (at any cost or by any means). The principle of share: the ultimate goal is concern for the well being of others.

  3. Moral vs. Reasonable Moral considerations pertain to human behavior that affects other people. Reasonable considerations concerns practical consequences of our acts.

  4. Reasonable Perspective If we were to share all of our resources equally, then everyone would be malnourished. As a consequences the entire human species would become extinct. Ultimately there would be no morality at all.

  5. Reason and morality conflict What do we do when morality and reason (practicality) conflict? Moral behavior can lead to self-destructive consequences, hence very impractical for our survival. For example, the right thing might require the sacrifice of one’s own life.

  6. Naturalistic Standpoint Natural biological evolution: Natural selection Nature, through an organism’s survival selects the appropriate traits and properties.

  7. Practical Perspective “Many argue that the practical imperatives of survival preclude moral behavior even by those who want to be moral”( 553).

  8. Moral Sandpoint “If every human being’s life is equal in value, then the equal distribution of the necessities of life is an extremely high, if not the highest, moral duty” (554).
