  3. Critical Reading: Short Passages • 48 multiple choice questions for both short and long passages • Read the passage and answer questions #21 and #22 on page 124 • Read pages 107-108: “Overview,” “A Closer Look at Critical Reading” and “Basic Steps for Answering Critical Reading Questions”

  4. Strategy: Types of Questions Kaplan handout: • Big Picture • Little Picture • Inference • Vocabulary-in-Context • Function • Read the questions on pages 110-111 and categorize them using the labels above

Strategy: Work the Short Passages • Actively skim the passage (30 seconds max) • Don’t get bogged down in details • Select a question and determine what you are being asked • Questions appear in the order of the information • For paired passages, do questions for one passage and then the other • For difficult passages, do Little Picture questions first • Locate the material you need • If you’re given a line reference, read the surrounding material for context • If you’re not given a line reference, skim for the lines you need and reread • Predict the answer • Eliminate answers and select the best choice
