WESY0303Sex work and gender identity: addressing multiple vulnerabilities in the PacificSesenieli Belo, APNSW Contact PointFiji
Fiji Islands • Population: Fijian, Fijian Indian, other Pacific Islanders; approx. 1 million • Government: (present) military • Law: sex work illegal • Constitutional protection against discrimination for gays and lesbians
No proper study of human rights abuses against sex workers or LGBT people • Worked on an RDS study of Female and TG sex workers and separate study of MSM (unpublished)
What we saw • A lot of violence from police against sex workers- particularly TG Sex workers • Sex workers being blamed by police for other crimes • Problems in access to heath services • A lot of general discrimination • Unable to go to police or government services for assistance
What we need… • Working on community research helped bring many sex workers and LGBT together to think about HIV, our health and our rights • Need support to turn these networks into groups who can work on HIV, other health issues and human rights • Help from social services, legal and human rights groups to help people who are abused and also to help us get justice • Links to other community groups to learn and to grow
