  1. FLIPPING GerundS or Gerundival attraction

  2. The gerundive takes over

  3. OK-ish Latin • I became rich and famous by teaching Latin • linguamLatinamdocendō • but since when can a noun have an object????

  4. Preferred Latin • Flip the gerund into a gerundive and make it agree with the noun. • (or gerundival attraction) • I became wise by teaching the Latin language • (ABLATIVE) • linguāLatinādocendā

  5. With this flip, the idea of OBLIGATION disappears

  6. The Gerund shut out

  7. Gerundive of Purpose • This is very common with ad + accusative • (it’s another way of doing purpose clauses) • Again, we flip the gerund into a gerundive • ad + acc • ad Caledonios • ad Caledoniosoppugnandos

  8. Battle of Culloden

  9. Remember that a gerund can only be a • singular • neuter • noun

  10. <Geeky point> • intransitive verbs (verbs with a direct object not in the accusative) have to be used impersonally, so they can look like gerunds. • verbs of going (eundem, festinandum, currendum etc.) • verbs taking the dative (impero, credo, resisto etc.) vino resistendumest a nobis ante ientaculum (Resistance to wine must be done by us ) = We must resist wine before breakfast. • For clarity, where there are two datives, the dative of agent often gets turned into the more expected a/ab + ablative)
