3 Different Groups • There are three different groups of Mollusks: • Gastropods • Bivalves • Cephalopods
Characteristics • Mollusks are soft bodied invertebrates • They have one or two shells • They either live in water or land • Gius- the organs in which carbon dioxide from the mollusk is exchanged to oxygen in water • They have a thin layer of tissue called mantle • They have a layer of mucus on which they slide • They have a tongue like organ with rows of teeth
Gastropods • Use a radula, a tongue like organ with rows of teeth to obtain food • It eats algae • Bivalves • Eats phytoplankton • Use gills for eating tiny food particles Food
Food • Cephalopods • Eats fish, crustaceans, worms, and other mollusks
Habitat • Gastropods • Lives best in deep shallow water • Reefs and sea grass • Cephalopods • Lives in rocks, corals, or burrows • Bivalves • Lives mostly in moist areas
Facts • The body plans of mollusks include a mantle, visceral mass, head and foot • Gastropods typically have one shell, a foot, and eat using a radula • Bivalves have a hinged two- part shell, a muscular foot, and eat by filtering their food from the water • Cephalopods have a head, a foot which has been modified into tentacles, and a well developed nervous system
Facts • Mollusks are food for many animals, have commercial uses, and are used for research • Mollusks fossils date back more than 500 million years ago • A natural pearl begins its life inside an oyster
Reproduction • Mollusks have reproductive organs • The male mollusk goes behind the female • He then puts “stuff” into the female • The female can hold the “stuff” for as long as she wants, until the babies are ready to come
