7. Exhibition categories in Hong Kong • Trade Exhibitions for regional and international buyers • Consumer products trade exhibitions - toys, gifts, housewares, jewellery, leather, fashion and textiles, optical, consumer electronics. Hong Kong is number one in Asia. • ii. Industrial products trade exhibitions tend to take place nearer to the factories in market like Chinese mainland, South Korea and Singapore.
7. Exhibition categories in Hong Kong b) Trade Fairs for the domestic market - IT machinery fairs. c) Public Shows - book fairs, food fairs, wedding fairs etc.
8. Critical Success Factors for International Trade Exhibitions • The support of an industry-cluster of suppliers • b) A strong market place - strong local demand or trading platform • Related hardware and software backup for the trade exhibition city as a whole. Hong Kong has all of them for international trade exhibitions
9. The Support of the Industry One third of China’s exports (around USD320 billion) comes through the Pearl River Delta (PRD). PRD is an important export-processing zone for consumer products. Buyers to trade fairs in HK can visit most of the exhibitors’ factories within 2 hours.
10. A Strong Market Place HK is the number one exporter for more than 10 kinds of consumer products, including toys and games, artificial flowers, watches and clocks, textile and garments, jewellery and electronics. There are as many as 150,000 trading firms in HK in addition to the presence of the buying offices of major international wholesale/ retail chains.
11. Related Hardware & Software Backups • Hong Kong has 550 international flights daily (Frankfurt Airport has 480 flights ). Flights in HK can reach most important Asian Cities within 4 hours. • English is widely used in HK • IPR is protected in HK. • HK is a duty free port • No sales taxes – transactions on the stand are simple
HKCEC is a professionally-managed centre, with superb facilities for exhibitors and visitors • There are a number of competent organisers in Hong Kong, with HKTDC as the major player.
12. Positive Development Trends a)China’s Accession to WTO i.) Lower tariffs for China’s import and export products will motivate more companies in the Mainland to utilise HK as a source for imported products and to access international buyers.
b) Relaxation of Business Visas for Mainland visitors to HK Over the past two years, an average of a 60% increase per annum of Mainland visitors and exhibitors to HK. The introduction of individual travellers from Guangdong, Shanghai and Beijing to HK will fuel the growth.
c) CEPA Hong Kong exhibition organisers can establish a wholly owned subsidy in the Mainland from 1st January 2004. More international organisers will start business operations in Hong Kong.
13. Limiting Factors Restricting the Growth of the Industry • Space demand during the high season of the year will become contrained.HKTDC’s Gift Show in April has around 3200 exhibitors but over 2000 companies on the waiting list. • HKCEC has 64,000 sqm gross exhibiting space.
b) HKCEC is not suitable for heavy machinery exhibitions with its present floor loading. With the relaxation of business visas of Mainland companies to HK, there is a possibility to attract industrial shows if HK can provide exhibiting space for machinery display.
14. Space Solution a)A New Centre at Chep Lap Kok with a minimum of 60,000 sqm will be completed by end of 2005, suitable for machinery displays. There will be a ferry pier at the site to the major PRD cities. b) HKCEC may have a 3rd phase extension with an addition of 30,000 sqm by 2009
15. Factors key to sustained growth in HK’s exhibition industry • a)More venue space to enlarge the scale of the existing fairs and to accommodate new fairs in the high season. • Expanded promotion to attract a larger number of international buyers to HK. • More co-operation with PRD cities.
16.The Major Roles of Hong Kong Exhibition and Convention Industry Association (HKECIA) a)Promote HK as Asia’s trade fair capital b)Provide training and education to the practitioners c)Enlarge the network of members d) Communicate with the Government and Media in one voice
