ABOUT LATTC • 17,500 students per semester ~30,000+ per year • Urban Setting – Downtown and South Los Angeles Communities • Ranked #1 on the Educational Needs Index • Low rates of student progression and completion over a period of ten years • No/Low Academic History - Adults: • 55.2% Do Not Have HS diploma or GED; 35.0% have less than a 9th grade education • No/Low College Going Culture – 18 – 24 yr olds: • Only 35% enrolled in post-secondary education 400 W. What Led Us Here…. • Poor performance on student success measures • Data on LATTC Student Success • LATTC Ranked Lowest in ARCC 2010 Report especially in Credit Basic Skills: • Successful Student Completion Rate, • Improvement Rate for Credit Basic Skills and Credit ESL Courses • Matriculation Coordination – Needed a better portal for orientation and assessment
Our Response…..Trade Bridge Academy (TBA) The Trade Bridge Academy (TBA) is a college-wide initiative that incorporates student support and instructional strategies to improve overall student success TBA is a commitment to continuously re-engineering and improving policies, procedures, and practices that are most critical for ensuring ALL Trade-Tech students complete their educational goals with expedience and excellence.
Basic Skills 75CE: Introduction to College • Support first-time students in learning how develop a college support network. • Facilitate students in identifying career interests and making informed choices about training and education pathways so they can discuss them with counselors/depts. • Inform students of math and English options such as taking math/English refresher courses, challenge exams, preparing for and taking the placement exam, that can lessen the time it takes for them to successfully complete math/English certificate and degree requirements
Part 3: The Next Level What happens AFTER Orientation? • Students use TABE Locator “pre-placement” test to get an idea of their strengths and non-strengths. • Students use their results to inform which classes are best for them given the context of their skills and goals; options include: • Free, short, intensive refresher Math and English classes (Basic Skills 2CE, 23CE and 35CE) • New classes start every 5-weeks • Learning Skills
Program Goals & Design Principles • Utilize their TABE locator test scores to develop their personal strategy for strengthening their English and math basic skills • Explain options and consequences so students can make informed choices for themselves • Provide readily available and accessible opportunities for students to refresh their basic skills throughout a semester • Create and nurture a college-going culture by exposing students to their post-secondary opportunities while setting high expectations and academic standards
Our Pedagogy and Shared Philosophy • College is for everyone • Build upon students’ existing knowledge, skills and assets • All students will benefit from having a gauge of their academic readiness without penalty • All students will benefit from academic preparation before they take the Placement test • Set students up for success by focusing on relationship-building and helping them navigate our systems • Sharing of personal stories helps students connect with others in creating a support system for their college journey
Student Success THE RESULTS • First Semester & Year Success and Persistence – Introduction to Post Secondary Education Course • Successfully completing a course ( 6%) • Successfully completing 6 units ( 25%) • Persistence from first to second term ( 10%) • Successfully completing a math and/or English class ( 10%)
