  1. Semantic Model Working Party (SMWP)OpenSG EIM Outreach • Stephan Amsbary, Technical Champion – EnerNex • Jay Britton, Co-Lead – Alstom T&D • Marty Burns, Collaborator– HyperTek • Steve Ray, Co-Lead – CMU 2012.March.01

  2. SMWP Goal – Industry Perspective • Fundamentally data is described via data models • Need crisp definition for data models across and within standards Emphasis • Identify semantic/ontological issues facing interoperability/data management • What is keeping you awake at night? • How are you addressing them? • Identify tools and methodologies to solve these issues – alter trajectory • How are you doing it today? • Simplify discovery, overlaps, gaps & consistency within and between standards

  3. OpenSG - EIM Framework Vision & Strategy Governance EIM Core Processes Organization Tools & Technologies Vision Sponsorship Data Quality CSFs & KPIs Information Architecture Blueprint Management Data Integrity Current SMWP Focus Areas Data Security & Protection Mission Stewardship Structure (Virtual, Hybrid, …) Technologies (DBMS, CMS, ETL, EAI, EII, Data Modeling, BI/DW, Collaboration) Data Lifecycle Management Data Movement Strategy Policies, Principles & Tenets Roles & Responsibilities Semantics Management Anticipated SMWP Focus Areas Database Management Goals & Objectives Alignment Functional Services Knowledgebase & Repositories Master Data Management Value Propositions Structure Business Value & Relationship Management Standards & Best Practices Information Services (A&R) Services & Support Source: OpenSG EIM Task Force Presentation – 2011.July

  4. SMWP Approach – Request for Help • Identify and prioritize concerns • Relate those concerns to semantics that might help • Present a conceptual use case to illustrate issues • Validate and enrich use case based upon feedback for March SGIP face-to-face Meeting in Charlotte • Contribute to SMWP direction and goals • Increase utility and solution providers’ perspective

  5. Demand Response Pricing Use Case Example Operations SCADA/EMS DRACS CIMs Market Market Management OpenADR Service Provider DR Enrollment/ rules Customer IEC61850SEP2.0 … Premise Automation System Device

  6. SMWP Tools/Methods Research • Align research with topic areas of concern • Use key real world examples - as defined by the industry • Demonstrate how tools would tackle and solve these issues • Understand approaches/technologies being pursued within the industry (utilities, other standards bodies and vendors) • Ongoing exploration of Semantic Technologies eg: OWL, SPARQL, SWRL, &c. by Steve Ray at CMU (funded by NIST) • Assist in standards harmonization analysis • Provide/assist data provenance and quality issue • Complement industry use of UML

  7. Does this make sense? • Work on a use case that is relevant (example used earlier)? • Align vocabularies • Capture relationships and constraints • Create mappings among standards • Use Semantic Technology to document resulting taxonomy/ontology • Can your company and OpenSG EIM help? • Suggested next steps – eg: SMWP participation in OpenSG EIM calls and meetings? • What is missing?

  8. Proposed Procedure • Goal to publish on SGIP Catalogue of Standards (CoS) • Similar to SGAC Conceptual Architecture activities http://collaborate.nist.gov/twiki-sggrid/bin/view/SmartGrid/SmartGridArchitectureCommittee • Schedule tiger team work sessions, comprised of: • SGAC, EIM members • Standards Development and Setting Organizations (SDOs & SSOs), NIST SGIP Priority Action Plan (PAP) Members • Volunteers from SGIP, SGAC from industry (OpenSG) • Follow current SGIP CoS Procedure
