How can I find a book? I don’t know How do I know which book is right for me?
YOUR CHOICE • Reading on your own isn’t like reading for school! • You can pick something that’s all about your interests.
FICTION BOOKS • Fiction books like novels or short-story collections can transport you to another world! • Maybe you like the classics, or sci-fi, mystery novels, or ghost stories. Give historical fiction a chance. • Try a range of types of fiction and see what you prefer.
Nonfiction • Nonfiction books give you the who, what, when, and why of something. • They tell stories using facts—but that doesn’t mean they are dull. • Many nonfiction books read like novels from start to fiction.
Graphic Books • Maybe you want to try a “graphic book”, which can be either fact or fiction. • Usually written with text and images, similar to a comic.
“Blurbs” • The reviews and quotes on the back and inside covers of many books are called “blurbs.” • They give you an idea of what the book is about. • It can help you pick a book.
Family Favorite • What was your mom’s favorite book when she was your age? • Find out what books your family members liked to read and give it a try.
Five Finger Rule • Choose a book you think you will enjoy. • Read the second page. • Hold up a finger for each word you are not sure of, or do not know. • If there are five or more words you didn’t know, you should choose an easier book.
