Standard Review Initiative Table • This activity also includes: analysis for future modification, alignment with teacher preparation, regulatory adjustments, etc. • Standards Area Key • Arts = Arts (visual, music, dance, theatre LOTE = Languages Other than English • CDOS = Career Development and Occupational Studies (seven technical disciplines) MST = Math, Science, Technology • ELA = English Language Arts SS = Social Studies • HPEF = Health, Physical Education and Family and Consumer Sciences 8

  9. SCDN Role and Input This is a unique opportunity to shape and determine what students need to know and be able to do in the years ahead. This initiative will impact all aspects of education in New York State including: Curriculum Instruction Assessment Teacher preparation and professional development Student preparation for post-secondary education and the dynamic global economy 9

  10. Key Questions for Feedback Reviewing the current ELA standards, what is missing? What should be added? What should be revised? In your experience and that of your colleagues, what needs to be changed in the current ELA standards to update them and to make them more relevant for our students now and in the future? Can you recommend names of candidates for our interdisciplinary standards review research team and the ELA workgroup of content experts? What would be the best strategy or method for SED and the Board of Regents to use to engage schools, teachers, parents, and others in this process? 10
