  2. Sports can mimic life in many ways, and baseball is no different. The term “get your head in the game,” is no accident. Much of the battle is won in your head, or as Yogi said: “90% of the game is half mental.” -Yogi Berra This may hurt the heads of those insistent on doing the math, but for those of us who can take it for what it is, some great lessons on starting and running a small business can be learned by simply realizing this one quote is very true.

  3. Know What You Know Have confidence in yourself that you can do this because you are capable. Know what you know and trust it. Whether you trained to be a vet, a lawyer, a CPA, or you simply love pizza or ice cream and know you can make a great business from that, know what you know. Recognize that you have certain skills that you can contribute to the business and use them.

  4. Know What You Don’t Know Maybe you know pizza or ice cream, or how to take care of sick animals, but you have no clue how to manage finances. Perhaps you have the business and finance side of things down, but you have never worked a pizza oven in your life. Knowing what you cannot contribute to your business is just as important as knowing what you can.

  5. Increase Where You are Lacking If you lack the confidence, the belief in yourself that you can do this, work on that. If you do not know anything about finances, get educated. If you can’t make a pizza or do not have a clue how an ice cream freezer works, learn. Fill in the gaps of what you don’t know. You will likely need to outsource or hire someone in for these tasks, but if you do not know how to do it yourself, they will be able to pull the wool over your eyes easily. This doesn’t work, of course, with the confidence issue. You must believe you can do it, and only you can do that. Others can have confidence in you, but no one else can have confidence for you.
