  1. A is for Annemarie. Annemarie is the main character in the story. B is for bravery. Bravery is what Annemarie learns she has even though she was scared, too. C is for Copenhagen. Copenhagen is where Annemarie, Ellen, and their families live. D is for Denmark. Denmark is the country where Copenhagen is. E is for Ellen. Ellen is Annemarie’s best friend.

  2. F is for fear. Fear is what Annemarie thought was the only thing she had before she learned that she was brave, too. G is for God of Thunder. The God of Thunder is what Kirsti named Uncle Henrik’s cat. H is for Handkerchief. There was a handkerchief in the story that helped Annemarie get over to Uncle Henrik’s. I is for Ingeborg. Ingeborg is Uncle Henrik’s boat, named after her sister, Annemarie’s mother. J is for Jews. Jews are who the Nazis were killing.

  3. K is for Kirsti. Kirsti is Annemarie’s obstinate little sister. L is Lise. Annemarie’s older sister who, sadly, got killed at age 18. M is for mama. Annemarie’s mother. N is for Nazis. Nazis were the army killing the Jews. O is for Occupation of Denmark. The occupation of Dnmark was when the Nazis took over. P is for Peter. A friend of Annemarie’s family, a resistance fighter. Q is for quick. Annemarie is very quick. It helped her on her journeys.

  4. R is for Resistance Fighters. Peter was in the Resistance. S is for Soldiers. The soldiers try to stop Annemarie on her way to help Ellen. T is for typhus. Typhus is what Annemarie’s family said “Great Aunt Birte” died from. U is for Uncle Henrik. Uncle Henrik is Annemarie’s uncle. He let Ellen stay at his house to keep safe from the Nazis. V is for veracious. It’s not always good to be veracious. . . .

  5. W is for war. War is what all of the bad things in the book were caused by. W is for war. War is what all of the bad things in the book were caused by. X is for King Christian X. King Christian X was the king of Denmark. Y is for young. Lots of the characters in the book are youung. Z is for zealots. The soldiers are zealots because they hate all Jews.
