Reason for Creation • “…certain selected rivers of the Nation which, with their immediate environments, possess outstandingly remarkable scenic, recreational, geologic, fish and wildlife, historic, cultural, or other similar values, shall be preserved in free-flowing condition, and that they and their immediate environments shall be protected for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations…”
Authorization of Act • This act was authorized in 1968 by President Lyndon B. Johnson, and sponsored by Sen. Frank Church • It was amended in 1984 to allow instillation and operation of facilities to protect the lamprey eel, as stated by Secretary of Agriculture • Other amendments over time have been add to include other sections of rivers
Enforcement • This act is enforced by many different associations that have to do with protecting wildlife, such as • The natural park service • Security of Interior • Secretary of Agriculture • Environmental Protection Agency • Land and Water Conservation Fund Act of 1965
Classifications • Scenic-rivers, or sections of rivers whose shoreline has limited degradation and are in view of roads • Recreational- Rivers or sections of rivers whose shoreline has been developed and it easily accessible by road • Wild-Rivers, or sections of rivers whose shorelines are barely touched and are not easily accessible to people.
Rivers • Rio Grande River, Texas (1978)-from about Mariscal Canyon downstream to river the Terrell-Val Verde County line • Chattooga river, NC, SC, GA (1974) • And 154 other rivers (as of 2004)
