Flying Lotus By Lauren Southey
Why are they a niche artist? • Flying Lotus, is an experimental multi-genre music producer from Los Angeles, California. • I would say that Flying Lotus (aka Juno Leed)is a niche artist because he is not sectioned to one genre, he experiments with many different genres which means he will appeal to a wide range of people. He produces many of his songs onto vinyl's which means one of the main audiences for his music would be DJ’s as they use vinyl's to mix. He doesn’t use any instruments apart from electronic devices or electronic instruments. He doesn’t have a lot of information on his website which could convey to the audience that they don’t need to know about him and that his music is the important thing.
How are they marketed? • They are marketed in a very different way compared to most conventional artists. With most artists you are able to just type their name into Google and find out most things about them but with Flying Lotus it is very difficult to find out much about him apart from looking at the wikipedia page (which he himself obviously hasn’t set up) this shows that people like Flying Lotus for his music and not anything else. The website is also very plain and has little colour on it with no information which attracts the audience just to his music. Also there are no fan sites or ‘fan twitters’ set up dedicated to just Flying Lotus either, meaning he is less in the public eye and less advertised. Also less worried about appealing to the mainstream audience. Although he isn’t very marketed Flying Lotus does have a youtube page which contains some of his music, maybe helping to let people listen to his music.
Where their music is most widely available. • Flying Lotus isn’t available in Tesco, Sainsbury’s, ASDA, WH Smiths and Amazon. All of these are stores that you can buy mainstream music in and music in the Top 40’s or Top 10’s. Where as you can buy Flying Lotus’ music in stores such as HMV, independent music stores and you can order their music on their own website aswell. This shows that their music is for people who are really into music and not for people who just listen to the Top 40’s music. In itself HMV is a specialist music store and it stocks a wide range of music.
How are they received by the public? • They are received by the public in a positive way it seems, there is a column on the internet which mentions how his ‘music has the same effect on people as smoking weed’ this could show that the public have a very varied opinion on him and that he could have either a positive or negative effect on it.
Where their music can be downloaded/listened to/purchased. • Flying Lotus can be purchased in many places but not on the most popular downloads website Itunes. Although some niche bands and artists can be found on Itunes they will never be shown on the front page of Itunes. The Flying Lotus songs can be purchased on both Amazon, HMV and the Flying Lotus website also. This shows that although it’s on well known websites
