The truths about the person and the work of God the Son is perhaps the most studied as well as the most debated out of the Trinity. Some believe that Jesus is just a man while others think that he is a god who appeared like a man.
We believe, however, that Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man. If he were not both, he cannot save us from our sins. There are seven characteristics that show that Jesus Christ is supreme in everything.
Jesus is the Image of God
Jesus is the Image of God (v. 15a). • He is the “likeness” of God. • He is the “representation” of God. • He is the “manifestation” of God.
Jesus is the Firstborn over creation
Jesus is the Firstborn over creation (v. 15b). • He has priority in time. • He has supremacy in rank. • He is NOT the first created being.
Jesus is the Creator of the universe
Jesus is the Creator of the universe (vv. 16-17). • He is the “originator” of creation (“in Him”). • He is the “agent” of creation (“through Him”). • He is the “goal” of creation (“for Him”). • He is the “sustainer” of creation (“hold together”).
Jesus is the Head of the church
Jesus is the Head of the Church (v. 18a). • Our Lord supplies authority and direction for his body. He is the leader of the church. • He is the power and source of spiritual life. Like creation, the church is “in Him”, “by Him”, and “for Him.”
Jesus is the Firstborn from the dead
Jesus is the Firstborn from the dead (v. 18b). • Christ was the first Person to rise from the dead with a glorified body never to die again. He broke death's hold on humanity (1 Cor. 15:20, 23).
Jesus is the Fullness of God
Jesus is the Fullness of God (v. 19). • All divine power resides in Christ as a result of His resurrection (v. 18) and there are no other mediating agents (cf. 2:9; Eph. 1:23; 3:19; 4:13; 1 Tim. 2:5).
Jesus is the Reconciler of all things
Jesus is the Reconciler of all things (v. 20). • The Cross made reconciliation possible. Now it is up to people to accept God's provision and "be reconciled" to God by faith in Christ (2 Cor. 5:20).
