What is dyslexia? • Rose Review 2009 • A learning difficulty that primarily affects the skills involved with accurate and fluent word reading and spelling. • Characteristic features are difficulties in phonological awareness, verbal memory and verbal processing speed. • Occurs across a range of intellectual abilities. • Best thought of as a continuum. • Good indication of the severity is by looking at home children respond to intervention
Visual difficulties • It is important to rule these out or in before anything else • You will need to complete a visual difficulties questionnaire • Coloured overlays can help
Difficulties can be with… • Phonological processing • Reading • Spelling • Language processing • Memory and working memory • Motor skills • Organisation • Sequencing • Self esteem
What can we do? • Monitor in class • Carry out Dyslexia Screen using Dyslexia Profile • If there is an accuracy/comprehension discrepancy may want to investigate further
