South East Scotland Academies Partnership Aims of the Academies • Provide the opportunity to study in college and university while still at school • Smooth the transition between school, college, university and the workplace • Encourage participation of under represented groups in HE • Support advanced entry into year 2 in Higher Education • Raise awareness of the industries which are growth areas in Scotland by providing work experience and work placement

  5. Food Science & Nutrition • 29 students from 6 schools in Year 1 • 17 S5 students 12 S6 students • 10 male students 19 female students

  7. Food Science and Nutrition Academy • Year 1 National Progression Award in Laboratory Science (SCQF level 6) Study chemistry, maths, microbiology, health and safety. Emphasis on practical skills development Entry qualifications Studied maths and science(s) at SCQF level 5 AND working towards Higher Chemistry

  8. National Progression Award in Laboratory Sciences Partnership delivery between school and college • School delivers 1.5 units – flexible • College delivers 3.5 units – Friday afternoon August – June • Some schools have opted to deliver one of the HNC units on science presentation skills

  9. Work experience • QMU Practical labs designed to provide an insight into working as a Food Scientist Guest speakers from Food and Drink Industry • Group visits to local industry • Individual visit to work shadow a scientist in a Food and Drink environment

Academic and study support at QMU Support advanced entry to level 2 of a QMU degree • Access to QMU Learning Resource Centre (LRC) • Academic skill development for example referencing coursework, research skills, study techniques UCAS application support • QMU guide for Academy students • Presentations on producing the personal statement

  12. Year 2 • HNC Applied Sciences • Study chemistry, cell biology, microbiology, • Project which integrates research skills with IT and presentation skills • Personal development • Delivered by College

Progression from Year 1 • Year 2 of the Food Science and Nutrition Academy (if progressing from S5) • Queen Margaret University (may be dependent on other qualifications) • Entry to Level 1 of a degree course in any one of the following subjects: • BSc (Hons) Nutrition and Food Science (tbc) • BSc (Hons) Nutrition • BSc (Hons) Human Biology • BSc (Hons) Applied Pharmacology • Edinburgh College (may be dependent on other qualifications) • HNC Applied Sciences • Modern Apprenticeship in Life Sciences

  16. Progression from Year 2 • At Queen Margaret University Advanced entry to Level 2 of a degree in any one of the following subjects: BSc (Hons) Nutrition and Food Science (tbc) BSc (Hons) Nutrition BSc (Hons) Applied Pharmacology BSc (Hons) Human Biology

  17. Progression from Year 2 • At Edinburgh College HND Applied Sciences (tbc) • At other HE Institutions: Level 1 or possibly level 2 of a science related degree course • At other FE colleges: HND in science related subjects • Modern Apprenticeship in Life Sciences • Employment
