Basic education • Compulsory for all children who are permanent residents in Finland • Lower stage comprehensive school takes six years, classes 1-6, ages from 7 to 12
Upper stage comprehensive school, classes 7-9 • additional teaching is available for one year after basic education, 10th class • It’s free for everyone
Vocationaleducationinstitutions and uppersecondaryschools • Both usually take three years • After vocational education you are qualificated to work in profession you have studied
At the end of the upper secondary school the students take a matriculation examination which gives you better opportunities to become accepted into institutes of higher education • Everyyear about 30 000 students graduate from upper secondary school
Universities and Institutes of higher education • Polytechnic qualification usually takes between 3.5 and 4.5 years • A matriculation examination or a basic upper secondary level vocational qualification is required to get into a polytechnic
University usually takes 5 or more years • Matriculation examination is the easiest way to get into the university • After higher education you can get a doctorate
