Linking teacher effectiveness and college readiness Valerie BraimahPresented at Learning Forward, December 5, 2011
Session Objectives • Discuss a definition of college readiness and identify the most critical role of a teacher in helping students achieve that path. • Examine the national context for teacher effectiveness – goals, dilemmas, and strategies • Examining our measures. Do they link teacher effectiveness to college readiness
What is college readiness What is College Readiness? How do Teachers Contribute to Student College Readiness? In groups of 4: • ALL – skim pages 1-11 of “Defining College Readiness”. • Group 1: Key Cognitive Strategies (pp. 12-14) • Group 2: Academic Knowledge and Skills (pp. 14-16) • Group 3: Academic Behaviors (pp. 16-17) • Group 4: Contextual Skills and Awareness (pp. 17-18) • As a group, create a t-chart like the one on the right
The Teacher Effectiveness Movement • Premise/Rationale • Teachers have the greatest predictive impact on student achievement, so if we invest in teacher quality, achievement will rise. (Ed Trust West) • Historically, we have not done a good job measuring teacher effectiveness, or linking incentives to measurable impacts on student performance. (The Widget Effect, TNTP) • By linking incentives and support to effectiveness measures aligned to student performance, we can ensure that all students are taught by the most effective teachers, and fulfill the greatest possible gains. (Measures of Effective Teaching (MET) or, depending on your POV The Three Legged Stool). • Lots more info: http://tcrpalliance.wordpress.com/

And now, a break for some age-old pearls of wisdom • People treasure what you measure • What gets measured, gets done • What gets measured gets managed • If we build it, they will come • To measure is to know The question is…to what end are we measuring and managing???
What our measures really measure • Value-Add measures • Pair-share: in your state/district, what is the bar we are measuring toward on standardized tests? • What are some alternative measures to a different bar? (e.g. CWRA) • Teacher Practice Measures • Examine three frameworks for effective teaching and discuss in groups: what is the bar for students these frameworks measure toward? • Danielson Framework for Teaching (FfT) • TCRP College-Ready Teaching Framework • Teaching as Leadership Framework
A parting thought • Is effectiveness good enough, or do we need teachers to be “transformational” to reach our college-ready goals?
