  1. Total War War Affects the Home front

  2. The entire force of government is dedicated to winning the war. • Activity: • Take a piece of paper and turn it sideways • Write these headings at the top: • Economy • Home front • Women • As we go through the next slides write down in the column which category each slide fits into. Total War

  3. In the countries fighting in WWI: the government told the factories what to produce. • The gov’t also told factories how fast to produce things. • Many factories were given new uses. Economy

  4. Rationing of supplies became common. • Rationing means that the government would control how much of an item was available to the citizens of the country. • Rationing covered everything… Homefront

  5. News about the war was censored. • Anti-war activity is closely monitored. • Governments feared the honest reporting would cause people to turn against the war. Homefront and Economy

  6. Unemployment all but disappeared in countries that were involved in the war. • Every able bodied person was needed to produce munitions or supplies to help the front line soldiers. Economy

  7. Women took on new roles and now worked in factories, offices and shops. • Women built tanks and munitions, plowed fields, and ran hospitals. • Women supplied the frontlines with clothing, food and weapons. Economy, Homefront, Women

  8. Many Women became nurses and saw the horrors of the frontlines first hand. • After the war women left the workforce in such high numbers, but the war effort forever changed the attitude toward what women are capable of doing.

  9. While the nations governments are waging Total War the citizens are starving, under clothed, and unhappy. • Russian Czar Nicholas is forced to step down and Russia withdraws from the war. • This opens German forces to focus again on the Western Front Russia withdraws from Eastern Front

  10. Second Battle of the Marne starts much like the first, Germany gets very close to Paris and possible victory in May 1918. • The United States has sent troops to refresh the British and French and by July 1918 the Allies are pushing toward Germany. Second Battle of the Marne

  11. Bulgaria and the Ottomans surrender. • Austria-Hungary is dealing with revolution at home and leaves the war. • German soldiers mutiny and the Kaiser steps down. • A representative of the NEW German government met with French leaders and signed an armistice on November 11, 1918. Central Powers collapse

  12. 8.5 million soldiers dead • 21 million wounded • Countless civilians dead due to starvation, disease, and slaughter. • $338 Billion spent to supply the war • An entire generation of European wiped out. Cost of WWI
