Term Project • Either team-based programming project (i.e., the same as programming exercises) • Or academic paper presentation • But, your should do it on your own (only 1 person), NOT team-based • A schedule will be arranged for both paper presentation and system demonstration • A proposal is needed around midterm (Apr. 2008) • Introduction, methods used, experiment designs
Proposal (for Programming Projects) • A one-page description of your idea about term project • Introduction: an overview of the problem that you’re trying to deal with • Methods: possible issues in the problem and the principal ideas of your ways to solve the problem • Experiment: design of your experiment to verify your idea • For team work members: the names and the expected responsible parts of each individual member should be clearly identified
Proposal (for Paper Presentation) • A one-page description of which papers you want to read and present • No team work allowed • You have to prepare a 20-minute presentation of the major ideas of the paper • Topics: information retrieval related • Possible (recommended) sources: • Conferences: SIGIR, CIKM, WWW, JCDL, … • Journals: TOIS, JASIST, IP&M, …
Possible Topics for Programming • Improvements on the prototype IR system during HW#1-HW#3 • Query expansion: global/local analysis • Relevance feedback • Visualization for search result presentation • Improvements: query-type, retrieval models, dimension reduction, ranking, … • Other applications: Web IR, multimedia IR, cross-language IR, … • Any topic you think interesting and non-trivial to build from our prototype system
Submission • Due: around midterm (Apr. 2008) • And your proposal is subject to review and possible suggestions on changes
