  1. Treating CVD

  2. By the end of the lesson you should be able to: • Describe the benefits and risks of treatments for CVD: • Antihypertensives • Plant statins, • Anticoagulants • Platelet inhibitory drugs.

  3. Blood Pressure • Antihypertensives are a collection of drugs that reduce blood pressure.

  4. Diuretics- increases volume of urine, which gets rid of excess fluid in the blood Beta blockers- block the response of the heart to hormones like adrenaline- slows the heart down and so reduces pressure. Treatments Sympathetic nerve inhibitors- stops sympathetic nerve responses which cause the arteries to constrict Angiotensin inhibitors- stop angiotensin (a hormone that causes you arteries to constrict) production

  5. What are the two risks of using antihypertensives? • Blood pressure becomes too low. • Drugs have their own side effects: coughs, swelling, tiredness, fatigue and impotence.

  6. Paradox • High blood pressure does not make you feel ill, though in the long term it could kill you. • The medication may make you feel awful but in the long term may keep you alive longer.

  7. Statins • Are drugs that lower the level of cholesterol in the blood. • They do this by blocking the enzyme in the liver that produces cholesterol and the production of LDLs. • They also improve the balance of HDL/LDLs and reduce inflammation in the arteries.

  8. Risks • Small • Muscle inflammation, joint aches, nausea, constipation or diarrhoea. • Risk of fatality small- used by millions of people.

  9. Plant stanols and sterols • Similar to cholesterol- they reduce the amount absorbed from the gut to the blood. • Usually sold as foodstuffs (spreads/drinks/yoghurts) • Can reduce chance of heart disease by 25%.

  10. Anticoagulants • Anticoagulant interferes with the production of prothrombin in the blood. • Makes blood clot less easily. • Risky if taken in high amounts- blood clotting can stop completely- potential to bleed to death

  11. Platelet inhibitory drugs • Make platelets less sticky so clotting ability. • Most common example is aspirin. • Risks- bleeding in the stomach, bleeding to death- needs close monitoring.
