RAISING CATTLE AND BUFFALO IN HERDS (ECONOMIC VALUE AND REPRODUCTION) A.Mamdouh Osman Assiut University
Introduction • Value of Herd Breeding : Milk Dual Meat • Disadvantage of Individual Breeding • (Poor Breeding)
Introduction Small Herd (Not less than 20 lactating cows) Size of Herd MediumHerd ( 50 Lactating cows) Large Herd ( More than 100 lactating cows) Huge Herd ( Thousands)
The largest single unit herd in the world included 35,000 Buffalo in Landhi – India • In Egypt, most farmers ( 90%) raised from 2-10 Head in a poor condition. • DISTRIBUTION OF CATTLE IN THE WORLD • World Cattle Population 1.4 Billion Head • Asia 32 % • South America 20 % • Africa 15 % • North America 14 % • Europa 10 % • Neozealand, Australia and Others 9 % • FAO Report (1998)

Role of Reproduction and Veterinarian in Animal Improvements • Reproduction is the basic foundation for any successful breeding in the farm • Gynecological care improved reproductive efficiency of any herd through • Reduced calving interval (Record System) • Improved milk and meat production by selection and proper scientific handling.
SCIENTIFIC ASSOCIATIONS RESPONSIBLE FOR IMPROVING LIVESTOCK IN THE WORLD • Cattle : Very large numbers ,may be more than 1000 Associations • Buffalo : Very few and as follow : • Brazelian Buffalo Breeding Association (1961) • International Buffalo Information Center (1981) Thailand • Argentina Buffalo Breeding Association (1983) • International Buffalo Federation (1985) World Buffalo Congress • American Buffalo Breedrs Federation (1987) • (South Ameica) • Egypt Buffalo Consultation Group (2002) • Egypt Prof. MSS.
