Digestive System Digestion – the chemical and mechanical breaking down of food into something the cells can use. Kidshealth
Major Organs & Functions • Mouth • Esophagus • Stomach • Small Intestines • Large Intestines / colon • Rectum & Anus • Liver • Gall Bladder • Pancreas
Mouth–Beginning of digestion. • Mechanical Digestionbegins with tongue and teeth. MOST mechanical digestion takes place here. • Chemical Digestionbegins with saliva breaking down starch to sugar. Saltine Crackers
Epiglottis • flap of cartilage • closes trachea (windpipe) when swallowing • food travels down esophagus • Peristalsis • involuntary muscle contractions to move food along
Esophagus-carries chewed food to the stomach. *Peristalsis – muscle contractions that push the food down the tube. stomach-secrete HCl (hydrochloric acid) & pepsin to help with chemical digestion. Mechanical digestion also takes place here with the churning.
Liver- have over 500 functions!!! - produces bile to help digestion fat. gall bladder - storage tank for the bile. Pancreas- secretes enzymes to help break down food in the sm. intestines
smallintestine- Food enters here AFTER the stomach. MOST of the chemical digestion takes place / the pancreas and gall bladder secrete chemicals Nutrients are absorbed here into your blood.
