Love for Enemies Matthew 5:43-48
Introduction • Listening to others • Bible was “transmitted” orally • Two parts are contained in this passage • Hatred • Perfection
Hatred • Jesus corrects the misinterpretation of Malachi (show Malachi Scripture) 2 "I have loved you," says the LORD. But you say, "How have You loved us?" "Was not Esau Jacob's brother?" declares the LORD. "Yet I have loved Jacob; 3 but I have hated Esau, and I have made his mountains a desolation and appointed his inheritance for the jackals of the wilderness." (Mal. 1:2-3 NAU)
HATRED • “Hate Esau” should be read as “displeased with Esau” • Why was God displeased with Esau?
HATRED • “Love your enemy” is defined as “Pray for your enemy” (show Scripture v. 44) 44 "But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, (Matt. 5:44 NAU)
HATRED • God’s blessings for the Earth fall on all people, therefore His love does also • Since God does not discriminate, neither can we
Perfect • 48 "Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect. (Matt. 5:48 NAU)
