  2. Introduction • New section of the Sermon on the Mount • Jesus talks about Piety (righteousness) • Hebraic Piety: Almsgiving, prayer, fasting

  3. Metaphors • Trumpet (announcements) • “Honor by men” (human recognition) • “Left hand and right hand” (religious piety is a duty that is due to God only)

  4. Almsgiving • 2 areas • Giving • Receiving • Importance of almsgiving

  5. Giving • Different than allowing God to take His portion • Done in secret: not doing it to impress people

  6. Receiving • Heavy taxes forced people to seek out alms • Considered shameful to ask for alms • People tried to avoid it

  7. Importance of almsgiving • Expresses mercy to the poor • Recognizes the poor person as a relative • A commitment to sustaining the community

  8. For us today • Government programs started in 1935 took almsgiving away (most of it) • Stories of a need for recognition • Plaques in church (arson story) • Donor control of gifts (Dillsburg) • God blesses us so we can bless others
