  1. Introduction to Microbiology Unit 3- L1.1

  2. Microbiology • Microbiology- basic science that explores microscopic organisms; or of life too small to be seen with the naked eye

  3. Microscopic Organisms : • Viruses • Bacteria • Protozoa • Parasites • Fungi • Algae

  4. Microbiology • These organisms: • Lack tissue differentiation • They are unicellular (consisting of a single cell-one cell) • They have many forms and sizes

  5. Microbiology • Viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites may infect the human body and interfere with normal body functions. • Some kinds of bacteria or fungi may infect the body to form colonies in preferred organs or tissues.

  6. Viruses • Viruses are non-living particles composed of a nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) and a protein coat. • Viruses need a host cell to reproduce.

  7. Viruses • Viruses invade healthy cells and use the enzymes and organelles of the host cell to make more viruses, usually killing those cells in the process.

  8. Viral Diseases • Most widespread illnesses in humans. • These illnesses range from mild fevers to some forms of cancer and include several other severe and fatal diseases.

  9. Examples • Cold • Flu • Stomach Virus • Hepatitis

  10. Transmission of Viruses • Often transmitted by: • -human contact • -through water • -Insect bite

  11. Prevention of Viruses • Vaccines and some anti-viral drugs are used to control and prevent the spread of viral diseases.
