  1. Hanson Public Library Looking Ahead

  2. Introduction January 2018 Board of Library Trustees initiated planning efforts focused on • Library services desired by the community • Current condition and future viability of the existing library building to meet the desired community service needs • This project is funded through a MA Board of Library Commissioners Library Building Program grant

  3. Getting Started • Library consultant Ruth Kowal hired by Board of Library Trustees to provide planning and oversight assistance • Trustees appointed Planning Committee • Linda Wall and Joanne Estes, Library Trustees • Pamela Fager, Betsy Jackson, William Kemmitt, and William Patton, Community representatives • Karen Stolfer, Library Director

  4. Phase 1 Crafting a new strategic plan

  5. How Did We Do It? What Did We Learn? • Planning Committee worked with consultant to find out what the community wants from their library • Survey: online, through social media, and in paper format-over 400 responses • Focus groups: over 30 individuals from age 8-senior citizens • Staff interviews • Public “flip charting” suggestions collected in the library: • Asked “How could this library be improved?” • Received 140 comments and suggestions • Conversations with key stakeholders

  6. We Asked the Community • How could the library and the services offered be improved? Are there new or different services you think would improve the library as a resource to you or to the community? • If you were designing the library today, what would you want it to be like? What would you keep? Add? Change? • What do you think the Hanson Public Library will be like in 5-10 years?

  7. What We Learned From the Community About Services • People want • To borrow books, DVDs, CDs traditionally and digitally • More programs and classes for children, teens and adults • Friendly & knowledgeable staff to assist with information searching, technology use, recommending a “good read” • Computers, printers and other technology and internet access • Delivery of library materials to the homebound • Expanded partnerships with community organizations, schools, groups • Expanded hours • A comfortable, welcoming building

  8. From the public input, the Planning Committee learned what aspects of the current library operation are valued and ideas for how those could be improved. Participants provided important insight into what the Hanson Public Library would and could be like 20 years into the future, providing the tools for the crafting of the new Strategic Plan & the Library Building Program.

  9. Phase 2 Crafting the Library Building Program

  10. The Strategic Plan provided the foundation for the work of the Planning Committee in the development of the Library Building Program.

  11. What Would the Community Like to See in Their Library Building? • Welcoming, attractive building, a place people want to spend time, flexible spaces & furnishings • Expanded public programming areas, large and smaller meeting/study rooms • Contemporary and adaptable power and technology infrastructure systems • Ease of navigating the facility, layout “makes sense” to patrons, fully ADA compliant • Environmentally friendly and energy efficient systems • Technology and telecommunications supporting library-owned and personally-owned devices • Ability for secure use of public programming/meeting rooms after hours • Dedicated space for teens and children

  12. The Current Library Building • Is • Architecturally appealing • Well situated • But • Too small to deliver desired services • Inflexible • Aging systems and infrastructure • It just can’t do the job any more

  13. Options • *Extensive renovation and expansion of the current facility (doubling from 8,195 square feet of library space to just under 16,000 square feet) • *Construction of a new library on a new location. Potential sites include the site of the Maquan School adjacent to the current library and the former Plymouth County State Hospital property

  14. Next Steps in the Process • Trustees, Town and State officials work on a possible timeline • Engage the services of an architectural firm to assist with the development of conceptual drawings of what the new Hanson Public Library could be (funding through the current MA Board of Library Commissioners grant) • Determine a desirable site for the library in the future • Develop a funding plan, including advocating for additional State funding through the MA Board of Library Commissioners Public Library Construction Program
