Sustainability: • Sustainability-a service or process that is maintained at a certain rate or level. • But will the mobile phone be a sustainable product? Many governments are planning for energy sustainability to maintain energy levels for the population. Sustainable tourism aims to balance the requirements of tourists with the needs of local communities and to protect the environment.

So what is Ecotourism? Using the pictures, write a definition of what you think Ecotourism stands for Ecotourism: tourism directed towards exotic natural environments, intended to support conservation efforts and observe wildlife.
How successful is Ecotourism? Its purpose may be to educate the traveller, to provide funds forecological conservation, to directly benefit the economic development and political empowerment of local communities, or to foster respect for different cultures and for human rights. Some of the main aims involve consultation with local communities on development sites, not exploiting the environment, protect wildlife and eat and drink local produce. Can you think of any ecotourism activities?
Ecotourism Case Study: Machu Picchu, Andes Machu Picchu, known as the “Lost City of the Incas,” is a 15th century Inca (Peruvian empire) city. Crowding, deforestation and tourism has caused some parts to be eroded and put the area at risk to permanent damage. Steps have been taken to ensure tourist paths are maintained and urban development is limited to maintain the site. The culture and traditions of the area are also protected. The Multiplier Effect is also evident in this area obtained through tourism.
