Remediation Division • Our mission is to protect human health and the environment by remediating pollution or contaminants from media such as soil, groundwater, sediment, or surface water. • The Division • Oversees the investigation and cleanup of hazardous and nonhazardous pollutants released into the environment. • Seeks restoration of damaged natural resources resulting from such releases.

Program Highlights - Superfund • The Superfund Section has been working with the Environmental Protection Agency to optimize remedies at sites.
Program Highlight – SuperfundSprague Road Treatment System Optimization • New photo-cat treatment system on-line using ultraviolet light to convert hexavalent chromium to trivalent chromium. • Expected to reduce hexavalent chromium from 440 ug/L to less than 1 ug/L. • Fully automated without generating a liquid waste stream. • Expected to reduce annual treatment system operation & maintenance costs by 50%. • May be used at other chrome sites in the area.

ProgramHighlights - PST The TCEQ continues to close leaking petroleum storage tank (LPST) sites.
Program Highlights - DCRP The program began accepting applications in November 2004. As the program matures, more sites are moving towards the cleanup/engineering phase. The most common cleanup approaches are in-situ chemical oxidation and bioremediation. Currently approximately 38% of the sites being addressed have progressed towards the remediation phase.

Program Highlights – Corrective Action • Streamlining the process for submitting notification and closure of non-permitted waste management units. • Concurrent submittal will save time and resources.

Program Highlight – VCPBastrop Fine Arts Guild The Bastrop Fine Arts Guild is redeveloping the historic cotton mill and grain silos into a fine arts facility Environmental concerns were present from the historic operations and the current operations. Areas of concern were located below the grain silos were soil with metals were present. The property owners are utilizing the floors of the grain silos as an engineered control to prevent exposure. The Certificate of Completion was issued in August 2012.

Program Highlights – Technical Support • A new Texas Risk Reduction Program (TRRP) guidance document was published in November 2013. • TRRP-15eco: Determining Representative Concentrations for Chemicals of Concern (COCs) for Ecological Receptors.
