Gender Equality • When women have the same power and control over their lives as men do, their health outcomes improve. • Unfortunately, in many countries, women have LESS power and LESScontrol over resources than men. This in turn typically leads to DISADVANTAGE in: • Economic • Political • Social • Educational and • Health domains

Gender Equality • There are also differences in gender roles that NEGATIVELY affect MEN also, such as – • Higher levels of risk taking • Higher rates of smoking • Higher levels of violence • On a global scale, however, gender inequalities impact on women’s health more severely than they do on men’s health.

  6. How can the following situations affect women's human development Two- thirds of the 800 million people in the world who lack basic literacy skills are female. Women hold an average 3% of seats in national parliaments in the pacific island countries and an average 19% of seats in East Asia 500 000 women die each year from complications during pregnancy

How can the following situations affect women's human development • Two- thirds of the 800 million people in the world who lack basic literacy skills are female. • This leads to many women working in low paid, dangerous, laborious jobs – which directly puts their health at risk. Prostitution is an example of this – increases the risk of HIV/AIDS infection • Women hold an average 3% of seats in national parliaments in the pacific island countries and an average 19% of seats in East Asia • The lack of input that women have in government can contribute to women having little say in the issues that affect them – such as male perpetrated violence • 500 000 women die each year from complications during pregnancy. 99% of them in developing countries. • Women are often neglected with regards to health care and other services and essential supplies. Women may be the last fed and not receive enough nutrients to adequately nourish them

PEACE • A peaceful society and environment are essential for promoting optimal health and human development. • When a country is in war or conflict their level of human development and their HDI s worse than many other countries. • Australia generally experiences peace, but many developing countries are currently experiencing war • Border disputes are usually a catalyst for war (Australia doesn’t share its boarder with any other countries so therefore risk of conflict is reduced.)

PEACE • Loss of lives • Lower levels of living conditions (houses destroyed) • Basic resources damaged (water, sanitation, electrical supplies) • Shortage of food • Physical injuries • Higher maternal and infant mortality rates • Increase outbreak of communicable diseases • Mental health is affected – people concerned for health and wellbeing • Decrease in standard of living • Destruction of infrastructure • Women are at higher risks of rape and abuse • Lack of protection • Left without an income
