Society And Gender Equality

Gender equality, is the state of equal ease of access to resources and opportunities regardless of gender, including economic participation and decision-making; and the state of valuing different behaviors, aspirations and needs equally. Many experts argue that the work of child rights NGOs in promoting girl child education, and a gradual shift in Indian society may change this. However, the work of these child rights NGOs in India is still unable to reach out to the most underserved communities in India.

‘Gender’ is a socio-cultural term referring socially defined roles and behaviors assigned to ‘males’ and ‘females’ in a given society. A girl should walk with soft steps, has to be careful with her posture, should speak softly and wear cloths in a decent manner. Gender roles in Indian society Some examples that we came across in our books in the early stage of our childhood- ‘Ram bazaar jaata hain.’ ‘Radha khana banati hai.’ ‘Mohan patang udata hai.’ ‘Mohini gudiya se khelti hai.’ In its social, historical and cultural aspects, gender is a function of power relationship between men and women where men are considered superior to women. Therefore, gender may be understood as a man-made concept that is a violation of child rights in the modern day. 107, Hastsal Rd, Vikash Nagar JJ Colony, Uttam Nagar, New Delhi, Delhi 110059

 2. E-mail-Info@Protshan.co.in Phone no:(+91) 954- 078- 1011 Addressing gender inequality The question now is why go for gender equality? The answer lies in the history of the world. Those countries that treat her women folk with respect and dignity, who practice gender equality have advanced and will continue to do so. India as we know is a developing country. It was under the rule of various kings and then British. But now, India is a democracy. What guides is the Constitution of India which clearly states that all citizens are equal. However, there has been little to no attention towards addressing child rights in India. This is the main goal of the various child rights NGOs in India - to bring this issue to the forefront and give it the attention it deserves. Even in 21st century, girls may have been gender specific career advice. For example, ‘Tum toh ladki ho teacher banjao half day job hai.’ ‘Ladke ho engineer banoge ya police m jaoge?’ 107, Hastsal Rd, Vikash Nagar JJ Colony, Uttam Nagar, New Delhi, Delhi 110059

E-mail-Info@Protshan.co.in Phone no:(+91) 954- 078- 1011 Girl child education to address gender inequality Girls are encouraged towards arts, humanities and domestic science and away from sciences other than biology. We spend almost 50% of the day in school as a child and despite of providing equal opportunities to girls and boys we still expect the difference in the labor of work school provides. I remember when I was in school; in annual functions girls used to dress up well to welcome chief guests and serve coffee or water and boys used to move furniture. Now there are two terms which should be discussed in this context. Gender equality, is the state of equal ease of access to resources and opportunities regardless of gender, including economic participation and decision-making; and the state of valuing different behaviors, aspirations and needs equally. 107, Hastsal Rd, Vikash Nagar JJ Colony, Uttam Nagar, New Delhi, Delhi 110059

 4. E-mail-Info@Protshan.co.in Phone no:(+91) 954- 078- 1011 What you can do to help Gender Equity is the process of allocating resources, programs and decision-making fairly to both males and females. This requires ensuring that everyone has access to a full range of opportunities to achieve the social, psychological and physical benefits that come from participating and leading in sport and physical activity. It does not necessarily mean making the same programs and facilities available to both males and females. Gender equity requires that girls and women be provided with a full range of activity and program choices that meet their needs, interests and experiences. Therefore, some activities may be the same as those offered to boys and men, some may be altered, and some may be altogether different. What needs to be done is to bring this issue to the discussion table, and work together to resolve it. 107, Hastsal Rd, Vikash Nagar JJ Colony, Uttam Nagar, New Delhi, Delhi 110059

 5. E-mail-Info@Protshan.co.in Phone no:(+91) 954- 078- 1011 NGOs are the backbone of the Indian society which often fails to give women equal opportunities to grow. Child rights NGOs in India encourages different programs which can help to break different notions and taboos that are present in our society. These child rights NGOs can act like catalyst which can provide an alternative pathway to bring the change. What you can do to help is to start with identifying one child rights NGO that you believe is doing good work, and donate for child education, especially girl child education. Your donation to NGOs in India will allow you to get a tax deduction if the child rights NGO is registered with the government and the tax department. Your donation will also be useful in ensuring that efforts towards girl child education can go beyond the government schools and start making an impact at the grassroots. It is this effort that will truly make the difference in the ground realities of girl child education and also make you a part of the change you wish to see in the society as an Indian citizen by supporting genuine child rights NGOs in India in their work to address gender inequality. 107, Hastsal Rd, Vikash Nagar JJ Colony, Uttam Nagar, New Delhi, Delhi 110059
