Innovation Crescent Industry Network status • Approach • Individual meetings with CEO or C-level HR in eight leading companies (July-Aug) • CibaVision, Immucor, Merial, Noramco, Quintiles, Sciele, Solvay Pharmaceuticals, UCB • Issued invitation to join to 40 additional employers
First meeting goals: October 8 • Innovation Crescent overview and background • Role of industry network • Regional workforce needs • Communicate Work Ready Certificates and job profiling capacity • Network will operate as standing committee under Georgia Bio
Certified Work Ready Communities Goal: Percent existing and available workforce earn Work Ready Certificates Increase county high school graduation rate To Date: 45 new counties; 20 accelerated 109 total counties participating

Work Ready Best Practices • Gwinnett County “preferred WR” • Workforce Boards requiring WR • DeKalb certifications increased from 82 to 276 in July (Using as part of WIA orientation) • Companies taking steps to be WR Certified facility • New $20 Gas card policy for assessments
Use of ARWB/NEGA WIB Mobile Units for additional capacity NEGA – 277 assessments on Unit • Working with Technical Colleges to proctor assessments • On-site at Gwinnett Expo
Biotechnology Career Pathways - Goals • Implement new high school biotechnology career pathway courses • Increase biotechnology exposure in 7th, 8th and 9th grade science classes in target high schools and feeder middle schools • Develop articulation agreements between 2+2+2 programs High school courses are planned to be dual enrollment or articulated with ATC or GTC; • Beginning expanded discussions on relating ATC/GTC courses to four year institutions
Biotechnology Career Pathways Status • High school courses • CTAE Biotech R&D Pathway being piloted in Barrow and Walton County • Biotechnology Science Elective to pilot in Gwinnett County (Central Gwinnett and Brookwood HS) and DeKalb County • All courses planned to launch fall 2009 • Teachers are meeting with expert trainer to coordinate plans, equipment, labs, best practices, etc. • Finding interest from other counties (in and out of IC)
Biotechnology Research & DevelopmentCareer Pathway Four-course pathway approved by State School Board on July 10, 2008 Introduction to Healthcare Science Three new courses: Introduction to Biotechnology Applications of Biotechnology Biotechnology Internship/ Independent Research Project
Introduction to Biotechnology • Included in this course is a basic overview of current trends and careers in biotechnology. Additionally, emphasis on basic laboratory skills along with the business, regulatory, and ethical aspects of biotechnology is included.
Biotechnology Internship/ Independent Research Project • This course is an advanced course primarily designed for seniors which places students in a workplace setting or offers the opportunity for students to complete an independent research project that applies biotechnology.
Applications of Biotechnology • This course further introduces students to the fundamentals of biotechnology. • Additional techniques in biotechnology. • Deeper level of laboratory safety • Additional applications in biotechnology is emphasized. • Prepare students for skill application in a workplace setting.
Status of High School Courses • Biotechnology Science Elective to pilot in Gwinnett County at Central Gwinnett and Brookwood HS) and DeKalb County (HS TBD) • Target 11-12 grade students • Prerequisites: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics II • Curriculum developed by GCPS and GTC under WRR funding (teacher stipends) • Submitted to GDOE September 1 for approval
Biotech Tasks for Existing Science Curricula • Committee working on 7th grade life science and high school biology tasks; 5 tasks and one culminating activity per grade level • 7th grade presented to state for review June 18. Minor edits being incorporated • 9th grade tasks being completed; expect presentation to state by October 1 • Goal is to include ‘Georgia company context’ and post on GDOE website aligned with GPS and curriculum framework • Middle and high school teacher-leaders being identified. • First training on tasks scheduled for Oct 4; follow-up training Feb 21, 2009 • Physical science committees being delayed one year.
