Maybe I’ll Try it Tomorrow The Challenges of Implementing Technology in Organizations Sophia Sullivan Background Results Organizations adopt new technology for many reasons. Frequently, workers themselves are in favor of the change. In spite of this, many technologies fail in the workplace. Why?? Success of a technology depends heavily on social influence factors Workgroups influence members Bosses influence members Workers decide whether or not to try based on their own expertise Frequently, changing the initial conditions doesn’t matter. The hypotheses in effect do. Workers often don’t make a decision at all, which from a management point of view is the same as rejecting the technology Even holding training doesn’t always lead workers to make a decision Lack of training almost always leads to rejection The Model • Agents: Bosses and workers • At each tick: • Workers update their attitudes based on a variety of factors • If their attitude is high enough, they choose to adopt the technology • If the attitude is low enough, they reject the technology • The model ends when all workers have decided to adopt/ reject the technology (although this doesn’t always happen) Hypotheses Implications • Several theories have been accepted by most theorists, but have never been tested at once. • H1: People’s attitudes towards a new technology is influenced by the attitudes of their workgroups • H2: People’s attitudes are influenced by the attitudes of their bosses • H2A: Training helps to share information and thus increases adoption • H3: Once the technology has reached a “critical mass,” it is more valuable to adopt • H4: Over time, the opinions of all others become less influential Management must work hard to make sure the technology is implemented effectively. The timing of training is crucial, and must be carefully tailored to the needs of workers Workers with less experience must be focused on the most, since they are the last to make a decision Unless the majority of workers and bosses have positive attitudes, the technology will fail
