Rim plunges 9% despite management shake-up First/Last Name Teacher Name BOH4M Date
Article overview • Shares at Waterloo, ON based company Research in Motion (RIM) dropped significantly (9.1%) on Monday, January 22, 2012 • Co-CEOs Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis stepped down. They were replaced by internal staff, chief operating officer Thorsten Heins (27 years of experience in wireless) and Barbara Stymiest. • Shakeup due to months of pressure from analysts and investors for a change in leadership due to the company’s operational failures. • Discussion: Balsillie and Lazardis were blamed by investors as the sources of RIM’s problems. Do you think investors should be pleased with Balsillie and Lazaridis stepping down?
Article overview • Some argue, changes in leadership will not lead to radical changes in the company due to lack of technical skills • RIM plans to launch BB10 operating system late in 2012. However, shares are estimated to sell for no more than $15 US. • Criticism - “Its the right move, but the wrong guy.” • Good strategy to switch up leadership, however analysts feel someone should have been put in the position of power who has world-class marketing and product development expertise • Discussion: Do you think the analysts are correct in their thinking? Should RIM have chosen a new, fresh outside perspective to support in rebranding/innovating the company?
Relevance to course • Business Strategy • Effective communication to consumers, internal and external stakeholders • Effective use of business communication documents • Continuous innovation and execution of processes (i.e. RIM’s promise from CEO to consumers) • Leadership Techniques & Qualities • Analysis of the characteristics of effective leaders • Management Challenges • Communication process in the workplace (i.e. Misconceptions and barriers to effective communication) • Motivation of employees to change perceptions of consumers • Planning and Controlling • Planning Tools and Techniques • The Management of Change
In my opinion... • It is essential to an organization’s future growth to have a visionary leader in place to foresee and plan for future growth opportunities especially within an industry such as wireless. • I believe it was a positive move for Balsillie and Lazaridis to step down. Hopefully it will showcase to consumers and stakeholders RIM is listening and wants to re-innovate themselves to regain market share and consumer loyalty. • Heins has a lot of hard work ahead of him to recreate a positive and lasting image for RIM. Consumers and investors will be hesitant to “trust” again until the validity of RIM’s technology is proven and is consistent to their brand promise. I am one of those consumers who is watching!
Group activity • New RIM CEO's Message to Employees • In this video, Heins RIM’s new CEO states: “Our growth in the past has come from our consumers. We need to have a better ear towards the consumer and we need to be constantly communicating with customers about Blackberry.” • If you were the CEO of RIM, discuss 2 initiatives you would put into place to generate consumer excitement and awareness for the Blackberry brand.
